Panulirus ornatus, commonly known as the ornate spiny lobster, is a large and colourful crustacean. Its carapace is adorned with striking blue, green, and yellow hues, featuring intricate patterns. It possesses long, spiny antennae and lacks claws, distinguishing it from true lobsters.
The ornate spiny lobster inhabits coral reefs, rocky substrates, and seagrass beds across the Indo-Pacific region. It is typically found at depths ranging from shallow waters to around 50 metres, thriving in warm, tropical marine environments.
Panulirus ornatus is nocturnal, emerging at night to forage for food. Its diet primarily consists of molluscs, crustaceans, and small fish. The lobster uses its strong mandibles to crush and consume its prey, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem as a predator.
Reproduction in Panulirus ornatus involves a complex mating ritual, where males transfer spermatophores to females. Females carry fertilised eggs under their abdomens until they hatch into planktonic larvae. These larvae undergo several moults before settling on the substrate as juvenile lobsters.
Currently, Panulirus ornatus is not listed as endangered. However, it faces threats from overfishing and habitat destruction. Sustainable fishing practices and marine protected areas are essential to ensure the long-term survival of this species.
