Celebrate the iconic Great Hammerhead, Sphyrna mokarran, with a scientifically precise illustration created for the NSF and CSIRO Tree of Life project, where I painted every living species of shark and ray. This artwork brings the ocean’s apex wanderer to life across your chosen products, perfect for collectors, ocean lovers, and shark enthusiasts.

Species spotlight: The Great Hammerhead is the largest hammerhead species and is recognized by its wide cephalofoil with a central notch and a towering first dorsal fin. Found in tropical and warm temperate waters around the world, it is a powerful solitary hunter known to prey on rays, bony fishes, and cephalopods. Its head shape enhances maneuverability and electroreception, helping it detect hidden prey. The species is listed as Critically Endangered due to overfishing and bycatch, making this portrait a meaningful nod to marine conservation. I have always thought that great hammerheads remind me of chinese new year dragon puppets in the way that they hold their crescent shaped fins and manoever throught the water. The chinese dragon is a symbol of power and good luck, and perhaps the Great hammerhead Shark is too.
