The Megamouth Shark (Megachasma pelagios) is one of only three filter-feeding sharks alive today, alongside the Whale Shark and the Basking Shark. Found worldwide in tropical and temperate pelagic waters from the surface down to around 1,500 m, it spends its days in deeper waters and rises toward the surface at night, following the vertical migration of the krill, copepods and jellyfish it feeds on.
Known from just 102 specimens as of 2015, the Megamouth is a rarely encountered animal with a distinctive appearance: an almost tadpole-like body, a huge broad head with thick rubbery lips, a silvery-lined mouth, and a bright white band across the snout visible only when the jaws are protruded. Females reach up to 7 m in length. Its name says it all: Megachasma is Greek for "great chasm", and pelagios means "of the sea".
This fine bone china mug features a scientifically accurate illustration by marine biologist and illustrator Dr Lindsay Marshall. Available in 8oz and 10oz sizes, with single-sided and patterned (wrap-around) print options. A thoughtful gift for shark enthusiasts, marine biologists, natural history collectors, and anyone drawn to the stranger corners of the ocean.
Product Features
Classy and beautiful, these fine bone china mugs feature vibrant, detailed marine illustrations by Dr Lindsay Marshall, bringing a touch of natural history to your daily tea or coffee. The 10oz flared mug is ideal for tea and coffee, with a generous capacity and smooth flared lip, while the 8oz straight-sided mug is perfect for espresso or a smaller, stronger coffee. Fine bone china is lighter, smoother, and more refined than a standard ceramic mug, with a thinner, more comfortable rim and a creamy white shade that shows artwork beautifully. Where a normal ceramic mug feels chunky and rugged for everyday use, these mugs feel more like special pieces of tableware, suited to gifting, collecting, and quiet cuppas you actually sit down to enjoy.
Creamy white porcelain
Fine bone china mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe, but for longevity hand wash with a mild detergent and avoid abrasive cleaners.
Each mug comes in a box and is swaddled lovingly in Lindsay’s custom-designed lanternshark tissue paper with a swing tag and (when needed) further protected in environmentally friendly, recyclable hex wrap, ready to gift or ship safely to its new home.
