Common Coral Trout
Plectropomus leopardus, commonly known as the Coral Trout, is a striking and highly sought-after species within the Serranidae family. This species is renowned for its vibrant coloration, featuring a base colour that ranges from orange-red to reddish-brown adorned with numerous small, bright blue spots scattered across its body and fins. These spots give the Coral Trout a distinctive and visually appealing appearance, which is a hallmark of the species.
Plectropomus leopardus holds significant economic and ecological importance. It is a prized catch for both commercial and recreational fishers, known for its high-quality flesh and culinary value. Additionally, the Coral Trout plays a critical role in maintaining the balance of reef ecosystems as a top predator, helping to regulate the populations of other reef species.
Plectropomus leopardus embodies the delicate balance of marine life within coral reef ecosystems, highlighting the importance of preserving these environments for future generations. Through dedicated conservation efforts and sustainable practices, we can ensure that this remarkable species continues to thrive in its natural habitat.
Coral Trout are typically found in warm, tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral reefs. They favour clear, shallow waters, often residing at depths of up to 100 meters. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is one of the most prominent habitats for this species, where they thrive in the complex reef structures that provide ample cover and hunting grounds.
Plectropomus leopardus are predatory fish with a diet that mainly consists of smaller fish and crustaceans. They are known for their solitary and territorial nature, often patrolling their chosen reef area and displaying aggressive behaviour towards intruders. Their hunting technique involves ambushing prey, taking advantage of their excellent camouflage and swift, powerful strikes.
The Coral Trout is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals initially mature as females and have the potential to change sex to male later in life. Spawning typically occurs in aggregations, often triggered by lunar cycles. The fertilised eggs are pelagic, drifting in the open water until they hatch into larvae.
While the Coral Trout is not currently listed as endangered, it faces various threats, including overfishing and habitat destruction, particularly the degradation of coral reefs. As a valuable species for commercial and recreational fisheries, sustainable management practices are essential to ensure the long-term health of their populations and ecosystems.
Efforts to protect Coral Trout populations include the implementation of marine protected areas (MPAs), restrictions on fishing during spawning periods, and size and catch limits to prevent overfishing. Ongoing research and monitoring are vital to understanding the species’ dynamics and ensuring effective conservation strategies.
Painting the Common Coral Trout

Background
I painted this as part of the Erub Island fish guide app. This commission began in 2014 and I don't know what became of the project. It would be great to hear if anyone has used this app!
